Adapting the design

How to adapt the design to your plot

Not every plot has the same dimensions — and it does not need to. The layout is simple, so the beds can be lengthened or shortened without spoiling the composition. The plan with a 100×100 cm grid does the work: each square is exactly one metre.

1

Measure the plot and read the grid

Measure the width and length of your garden, then count the squares on the plan. You immediately see by how many metres your bed is longer or shorter than in the design.

2

Convert plants into metres

The plan shows how many plants sit on each metre of a bed. Extend the bed by two metres — add the same number of plants that stand on two metres in the design. Shorten it — subtract. That is how you get the exact quantity to order.

3

Repeat what you like most

When extending a bed you do not need new species. Simply repeat the plants you like best — the composition stays coherent and the garden gains rhythm.

Detached house instead of semi-detached?

The designs are prepared for a plot with a semi-detached house, that is with garden on three sides. If your house is detached, one strip is left without planting. The solution is simple: take a bed from any of the five variants and add it where it is missing. The planting plan on the 100×100 cm grid gives exact spacings, so the moved bed keeps the right proportions — and you match it to how sunny that side of the house actually is.
